I was  in that crowd watching Levon Helm and The Ramble on a sticky summer night under a fog of various types of smoke, under a tent, under a blanket of stars in middle Tennessee a few years before I had made this place my home. </p> <p>Sure, I knew of and respected Levon Helm for his role in The Band, the same way a majority of music lovers do I imagine, but it wasn’t until I saw him play that night that I could consider myself a fan. After I began to listen to Levon Helm as a separate entity from The Band (which I did for the first time at that show) I realized that when I broke it all down, much of the ‘facets’ I loved so much about The Band would not have been without him. Levon’s creative drumming and country hardend yet soul softened voice made songs like “The Weight”, “Cripple Creek” and “Ophelia” the favorites. </p> <p>I may not have even gone to see Levon play that night amongst all the flashing lights, beats, bands and overall sensory overload that is Bonnaroo had it not been for our amazing campsite neighbor, Wild Man Steve http://www.wildmansteve.com/ . We were lucky enough to be there with artist passes camping among the other folks who also made the cut to play Bonnaroo. On an even greater stroke of luck we happened to be parked right next to Wild Man Steve, a local indie music radio legend in Alabama (where we were living and going to school at the time). There is nothing better than sharing a campsite with a guy who knows music, new and old, and loves to share and listen and bullshit and laugh. Wild Man loved Frank Zappa (we went and saw Zappa Plays Zappa together), but he LOVED Levon Helm in a different realm. He would go on and on about Levon with such excitement and admiration and I thought to myself, “sure this guy is a pretty old stoner, but if he can still get that giddy over Levon Helms after all shows he has seen, bands he has heard and people he has met then I gotta check it out.” </p> <p>And I did. And I loved it. And as Levon Helm passed away today I definitely feel bummed out.
